Tales of The Macallan II is the second installment of a prestigious collection of ultra-rare whiskies conceptualised by the creative agency Potlatch.

Project details

Part luxury packaging, part editorial, the 72-year-old Tales of The Macallan Volume II whisky is presented in a hand-crafted Lalique crystal decanter held within a leather-bound tome featuring illustrations from renowned artist and illustrator, Andrew Davidson.

Andrew Davidson produces his illustrations using traditional wood engraving methods that require a unique production approach that balances technical skill with artistic sensibility. For this project, he depicted scenes from the life of Alexander Reid, who founded The Macallan in 1824.

Our team brought Davidson’s illustrations to life, carefully preserving the intricate detail of the original woodcuts as we transformed them into animation. We developed an original animation style inspired by the zoetrope animation technique, which was invented during Reid’s lifetime.

We added photorealistic CGI shots at the start and end of the film to present the product in a way that conveyed a strong sense of time and place.

For the soundtrack, we partnered with eminent Scottish composer Craig Armstrong to create a bespoke piece that elegantly combines tradition with modernity, ideal for a brand like The Macallan.

The result is a unique production that stays true to the original creative vision while carefully bringing the masterful illustrations of Andrew Davidson to life, paying homage to the idea of mastery and elevating a campaign that places a prestige product at the heart of the story.
